Black History Month Spotlight: Isis Brantley

“There is no force equal to a woman determined to rise.” – W.E.B Dubois.

Happy Black History Month! Although I’m not a fan of the term “Black History Month”, I think it is important to pay homage to some of our heroes. Today, we are celebrating Isis Brantley!

It wasn’t too long ago that Isis Brantley, a natural hairstylist in Texas, was arrested and jailed for teaching out how to braid hair. Isis has been braiding since 1979 and has taught others how to take care of their natural hair care since the 80s.

She opened the Institute of Ancestral Braiding in 1981 without a cosmetology license, which required 1,500 hours of coursework. However, the course did not make sense for braiding.

She has been fighting for the over-regulation of braiding, for over a decade and in 2007, Texas created a 35-hour hair braiding certificate.

The fight continues…
